Rise in jobless household numbers

Rise in jobless household numbers
Iain Duncan Smith has attacked Labour's record on welfare as "appalling" after new figures showed the number of workless households had more than doubled in their 13 years in government. The Office for National Statistics revealed that in the second quarter of 1997, when Labour took office, the number of workless households stood at 184,000. By the second quarter of 2010 that figure had risen to 352,000.

The Work and Pensions Secretary said: "These figures show the appalling inheritance we received from the last Labour Government.

“They should be ashamed of their failure to tackle the root causes of entrenched worklessness and benefit dependency which has meant that millions of children are now growing up in households where no-one has ever worked."

Is this a Tory press release? How is going from 1% to 1.7% 'more than double'? Double 184,000 is 368,000, not 352,000. It's less than double quite clearly. I'm not saying it's great, but basic maths should not be beyond politicshome!

Red Rag

It is called deflection Alex, the economy is tanking, Lansleys privatisation of the NHS is in dissaray, inflation is soaring, public debt is soaring, private investment is falling, GDP predictions for this year are falling, consumer confidence is falling, business confidence is falling, the balance of payments is rising, disposable income is at an all time low.....but pick out a statistic about unemployed households, exagerate it by saying it has doubled and put it as your headlines. Do I need to tell people what the figure was before the world recession....yes, it had actually fallen, but hey, it's Politicshome and their party is still behind in the polls so lets repeat the Tory line and make it the headline. I am sure when unemployment starts rising very soon, the issue of unemployment will fall off politicshomes radar.....wonder why?

Hi Graeme!

Boudicca

'Labour isn't working' obviously applied to the last 13 years of government as well as the failures of Wilson and Callaghan. This is an appalling situation tyt STILL our Government will take no effective action to stop immigration. All the time we have open borders for any EU citizen, they will come here and take jobs that British people should get.
