Councils consider evicting rioters

London councils are considering evicting tenants who were involved in the recent riots from their council homes.

Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham and Southwark councils today joined Greenwich council in threatening to carry out the measures, with Manchester and Croydon councils also floating the idea.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps appears to have given his support to the move, tweeting earlier today: "I'll back social landlords who evict tenants involved in any rioting".

Councillor Ian Wingfield of Southwark Council added: "As a council we will seek, within the confines of the law, the eviction of anyone living in a council property who is found guilty of these crimes."

Members of the public are also demanding that those convicted of looting lose their benefits. An e-petition on the Government website has now amassed 79,000 signatures. A debate will be held in Parliament on the petition's suggestion if it reaches 100,000 signatures.
