Lib Dems plot land tax

Lib Dems plot land tax
The Liberal Democrats are developing a land value tax that would horrify their Tory counterparts in the Coalition, The Sunday Times reports. The newspaper quotes Business Secretary Vince Cable as saying the Government needs a "proper examination about how a land tax could be made to work".

Meanwhile Chancellor George Osborne has continued his crackdown on tax evasion. Writing for The Observer, the Chancellor promised tax dodgers the Government "will find you and your money", and insisted the deal to tax wealth hidden in Swiss banks was just the beginning.

I thought the point of being a Liberal Democrat was to reduce the interference of centralised government in all our lives.

Robert C

No, it is not the point. "The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity."

Part of that includes getting the rich to pay their fair share of taxes and not to dodge them through avoidance schemes. Note the redundant inverted commas on the ST headline around "rich". Rich is rich - what bit of that do they not get?
