25 universities and colleges reduce fees
25 universities and colleges have announced they are to reduce their tuition fees. Earlier in the week UCAS, the university admissions body, said that applications for universities had reduced by 13% from the same time last year. Fee reductions vary from cuts of £50 to £2,900. The Universities of Chester, Cumbria, Teesside and the Institute of Education are to reduce their fees for either all or some of their undergraduate degree programmes.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said: "Today's announcement is good news for students as there will be an even greater focus on fair access and student choice."

He added: "Universities and colleges with revised access agreements will contact any affected students to explain their options shortly."

Labour's Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna said: "Today’s announcement shows the chaos at the heart of this out-of-touch higher education policy."
