Unemployment at 2.64m
Unemployment has risen to a 17-year high of 2.64m, with 128,000 more people out of work in the three months to October.
Ed Miliband attacked the Prime Minister at Prime Minister's Questions, accusing him of "betraying a generation of young people". Shortly after on Sky News, Shadow Chancellor Mr Balls said Mr Cameron "did not have a single answer" to Mr Miliband's criticisms.
The rate of unemployment remained at 8.3%. Youth unemployment rose to 1.03m, as Ken Clarke yesterday said the UK faced "a long period of youth unemployment".
The employment minister Chris Grayling said that there had been "some stabilisation" in the number of unemployed people but admitted that the Government had "work to do".
Research from the Institute of Public Policy Research has warned that unemployment among women is set to rise, with the thinktank calling for the Government to set up a system of universal childcare to tackle the problem.
Thomas Cook has this morning announced the closure of 200 stores over the next two years following losses of £398m, with around 1,000 jobs expected to be lost.
