More accusations in Ashcroft row

More accusations in Ashcroft row
Lord Ashcroft has been accused this evening of "systematic tax avoidance" by the Liberal Democrats, as the row over his funding of the Conservative party refuses to die down. The Guardian claims the peer exploited his off-shore tax status in order to avoid VAT on opinion polls commissioned for the Tories - but the party claim they do not recognise the polls as Conservative party polling.

Classic Elmer Fudd Bluster - what a tangled web we weave... are we to believe that David Cameron never asked about it? That he never wanted to know about Bearwood services - David Cameron was either a savant or is lying. Come clean Cameron. it is wrong that The Conservatives should seek to buy the election with foreign money.

Winston

Pathetic posts from Simon and his like.Taking this moral high ground and talking about Foreign Momey. This from a party who has taken money from questionable sources for years and takes more non dom cash than anybody.Added to this we have 3 Labour MPS on criminal charrges a PM accused by reliable sources of Bullying Juniour staff (a typical trait of bullies) I bet you are hoping Brown avoids any questions tommorow on HIS disastrous decision to cut our helicopter budget when we were fighting two wars. The tories should take no lectures from this lot!!

Anna

Labour are really floggng a dead horse on this - move on!

Les

What's with the ? on your leader - the electoral commission HAVE cleared his company

christina speight

The blog shows its bias every day now - Ashcroft has done nothing wrong - the Tories have done nothing wrong - the Labour is awash with sleaze and it gives money to the unions who launder it and make donations to the Labour party and keep the party afloat with it.

Phil

Ashcroft set up crimestoppers Has claimed sod all since entering the HOLords. In stark contrast several NuLabour non-dom Lords have claimed hundreds of thousands of pounds from the taxpayer in expenses. My question is why is the MSM headed by the BBC ferociously trying to smear Ashcroft and not even trying to investigate what is possibly far more fertile pastures in the Nu labour and LibDem party. This is rapidly becoming a witch hunt and its being led by hypocrites.

christina speight

Phil says "This is rapidly becoming a witch hunt and its being led by hypocrites." It's being stoked endlessly and led by Politics Home. The libdems took milllions from a criminal and are allowed to keep it. This blog is just not interested in the manifold examples of real corruption in the Labour Party. Neither Ashcroft, Cameron or Hague have done anything wrong AT ALL. Why don't you shut up and show some principles.

Crusty

This is such a non event as to make me sick of hearing about it for goodness sake stop being so hysterical about this " non-story" No wonder politics are so despised in this country when this senseless bickering carry's on It will stop me voting !!

ianrobo

Crusty, how is this a none story ?

It is all about the major Tory donor and the influence he holds over senior shadow cabinet members

If this was labour (and yes we should ban non dom donations) you can bet you would not say it is a 'non-story'

christina speight

It is a non-story being stoked by Mandelson - twice sacked for corruption - and one in which Ashcroft and the Tory party have done absolutely nothing wrong.    What would be a story would be Lord Paul a non-dom, the 3 Labour MPs on trial, the crooked diversion of taxpayers' money to the unions and through them back to the Labour party.  All of this is wrong but so far the Tories have decided not to indulge in 'tit-for-tat'.

Red Rag's up the pole.  Of course i know about the ownership of the site but editors like to show how macho they are by defying their proprietors sometimes.

ianrobo

So Christina are you seriously saying that the Times and Telegraph both strong tory papers and both very critical of Ashcroft have swallowed Mandlesson's line.

Honestly that is beyond belief and there are facts here you are ignoring, if you look at this with your head out of the sand you can see the damage it is causing. You have to ask yourself how your party has let this happen when they knew (we all did ) that Ashcroft would become a major issue and yet no plans to combat it.

You going to question why your own party did not even answer to an INDEPENDENT commission or is it all a conspriacy ?

BGarvie

This is now becoming a 'witch hunt' and both Labour and the Lib/Dems seem to be in a state of sheer panic now the Electoral Commission has found Ashcroft's donations are all legal. The astute electorate want policies discussed not non-dom donations.

crawford tillingast

Ah, the Lib Dems are joining in - who cares?
