Pupils failing to study maths to good standards
British school children are less likely to study maths to a high standard than those in most other developed countries, a leading academic has warned. Professor Stephen Sparks, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education, said that children were "put off" studying maths beyond GCSE level because of test-driven lessons which focused on "dry procedures" to ensure pupils pass exams rather than a rounded understanding of the subject.
