Syrian veto a 'grave error of judgement'

Syrian veto a 'grave error of judgement'
The decision of Russia and China to veto the peace plan for Syria at the United Nations Security Council was a "grave error of judgement", William Hague has said.

In a statement to the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary added that the ongoing violence in Syria was "utterly unacceptable" and that President Assad's regime was "doomed".

Nabil Elaraby, the head of the Arab League, also voiced his concerns, saying that the ongoing violence was beginning to look like "civil war".

Downing Street earlier criticised Russia and China for vetoing a UN resolution condemning the Syrian regime.

The Prime Minister's Official Spokesman said this morning: "We find their position both incomprehensible and inexcusable."

Syrian government forces have renewed shelling the city of Homs despite international condemnation of the ongoing violence.

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has said that the UN must not take sides in a Syrian civil war. Mr Lavrov said the draft UN Security Council resolution on Syria was "not hopeless" but must be amended: "Unless you do it both ways, you are taking sides in a civil war".
