PM chairs security meeting on Syria
The National Security Council has agreed a three-point plan to pile pressure on Syria, Downing Street has revealed.

Number 10 confirmed that the Government has agreed to further sanctions on Syria, and also a push to work with the Syrian opposition and the Arab League. There will be no arms deals between the UK and rebel forces, however.

Foreign Secretary William Hague yesterday assailed both Russia and China for vetoing a UN resolution on Syria, calling it a "betrayal of the Syrian people."

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in Syria for talks with the government. Mr Lavrov's visit comes as the Syrian army this morning launched a fresh attack on the city of Homs. There are reports that President Assad is preparing for a referendum on constitutional reform in Syria.

The United States has closed its embassy in Damascus and Mr Hague yesterday called the Assad government a "doomed regime" that no longer commanded legitimacy at home, or in the international community.

This morning the Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt described the situation in Homs as “deeply depressing and frightening,” and called on Mr Lavrov to “get the killing stopped.” Speaking to the BBC, Mr Burt vowed to continue to pursue diplomatic means while supporting opposition groups politically in the country.

The Turkish prime minister Recep Erdogan has said he will begin a new international initiative, criticising the "UN fiasco", while France and Italy have withdrawn their ambassadors.
