May blasts Qatada bail ruling

May blasts Qatada bail ruling
Theresa May has strongly criticised the decision to grant bail to the radical cleric Abu Qatada. Answering an Urgent Question in the House of Commons, the Home Secretary stressed bail conditions would be among the "most stringent imposed on anyone".

Ms May said: "I continue to believe Qatada should remain behind bars…The right place for a terrorist is in a prison cell. The right place for a foreign terrorist is in a foreign cell, far from Britain."

In the wake of the ruling that Qatada should be released on bail, a Number 10 spokeswoman said this morning: "It's not the end of the road. We are considering our options." She added that Downing Street recognised that "this is a dangerous man".

At 3.30pm this afternoon, Theresa May is facing an urgent question on the issue, after the Speaker granted a request by Labour's Paul Goggins.

The European Court at Strasbourg said Mr Qatada could not be deported to Jordan due to fears about whether a Jordanian court might use evidence obtained under torture against him.

Earlier today, Attorney General Dominic Grieve admitted he was "very concerned" about the situation. Mr Grieve told the Today programme he was “trying to see if it can be resolved satisfactorily.”

Also this morning, the Government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation said the possibility of Mr Qatada being deported should not be “ruled out”. David Anderson told the BBC’s Today programme that ideally Mr Qatada would be tried in the UK, but: “The next best option is certainly deportation and I don’t think that should be ruled out.”

Conservative MPs have criticised the ruling from the European Court, as Dominic Raab said the decision was “undermining public protection,” while Bill Cash said it “reinforces the need to reform the Human Rights Act.”
