Hughes takes £45k settlement
Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes has this morning agreed a £45,000 plus costs settlement with News International for the hacking of his voicemail messages.
Speaking outside the High Court, Mr Hughes said the evidence of his case demonstrated that "the practice of hacking was widespread". He expressed his determination to use the Leveson Inquiry and Parliament to "make sure the system for dealing with the press is much more effective in the future that it has been in the past".
Lord Leveson will hear evidence today from the Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer and the blogger Paul Staines, who previously leaked the Alastair Campbell's witness statement on his Guido Fawkes website. Yesterday the editor of The Times James Harding admitted that evidence of the newspaper’s involvement in email hacking had been withheld from the authorities.
