Bercow 'horrified' by Commons fig trees

Bercow 'horrified' by Commons fig trees
David Cameron has backed Speaker Bercow in calling for an end to a £400,000 contract for Commons fig trees.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said he agrees with the Speaker's comments and that the House of Commons, like the rest of the public sector, should be cost-conscious.

He added: "All parts of the public sector need to be looking at where they can find savings. I don't see any reason why Parliament shouldn't."

Speaker Bercow has said he is "horrified" by the contract for fig trees and wants it terminated as soon as possible.

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with PoliticsHome's sister publication The House magazine, the Speaker also defended the practice of having prayers in the Commons before sittings, saying they were a "positive" for the House.
