PM to head millennium goals committee
David Cameron has been asked to chair a UN committee tasked with creating a new set of millenium development goals.

The move is likely to solidify the Government's committment to increase overseas aid to 0.7% of GDP, despite the recession and opposition from some peers.

"We want to refocus the goals to put economic development at the heart," a government source told the Guardian.

"The current goals focus on kids' right to education, levels of infant mortality and so on. They are fine, but does an exclusive emphasis on them really help development? What about new goals to give people property rights or economic rights?"

The current goals, which were agreed in 200 and expire in 2015, include halving extreme poverty, to halting the spread of HIV/Aids and providing universal primary education.
