In that the population of the Falkland Islands have strong links with Britain (similar to those of the Protestant poplulation in Northern Island) and have repeatedly argued to remain a British colony there seems a stalemate similar to Gibraltar and the Spanish. Arguably the physical location of the islands would strengthen the Argentine claim, but that would disregard the inhabitants whose only experience of Argentine rule was under the invasion forces of 30 odd years ago. Just as Scotland benefited from the discovery of oil in the North Sea and Atlantic, the British government should be working with the Argentine government to arrange similar off-shore exploration development to the benefit of the Argentine people. For the American administration to play backyard politics with the people of the islands is further demonstartion of the one-sided nature of the so-called alliance between America and Britain. In all things the Americans see themselves as beneficiaries in all things, what makes profit for corporate America is all that drives its foreign policy - Iraq being a major example. With the likely increase in wealth creation, should oil be disacovered in commercially viable quantities around the Falklands, the pressure on the Argentine government to grab the milk cow will increase. While the British government continue to support American policy in Iraq/Afghanistan the military will not be in a position to undertake another Falklands response, thus leaving the people on the islands again at the mercy of invasion. Solution: Mr Miliband informs the Obama administration in no uncertain terms that if the do not provide unequivocal support for the wishes of the Falkland Islanders they can kiss British military support in their eastern escapades goodbye. Let's say it as it is - that this so called special relationship should not just be Britain following the heavy boot of America around the world, by complicity supporting a nation of torturers and bullies, and as such putting the British public at extreme risk.
