Burnham's mental health warning

Burnham's mental health warning
Andy Burnham has said the flaw in the Mental Health Act which led to up to 5,000 patients being institutionalised by doctors without proper approval is symptomatic of the neglect towards mental health by society as a whole.

The House of Commons will today vote on emergency legislation to close the loophole, revealed by Jeremy Hunt yesterday, while there will also be an independent review into the issue. The patients were detained after advice from 2,000 doctors who were "not properly approved".

Mr Burnham told the Commons today the episode proved mental health “doesn’t get the focus that it needs”.

He argued that this problem existed in the "local in the NHS, at a regional level in SHAs [Strategic Health Authorities] or indeed in the Department of Health and it goes beyond that I don't believe that mental health gets the consideration that it needs in Government or indeed in this place [the House of Commons]".
