Govt announces NHS mandate
Jeremy Hunt has declared an “historic moment” for the NHS as he announced the service’s first ever mandate.

The document, published this afternoon, sets out the NHS’ priorities over the next two years, and Mr Hunt said it marked the moment which made the service truly “operationally independent”.

The mandate calls for patients to be able to book GP appointments online, as well as ordering prescriptions. The other focus of the mandate is on earlier diagnosis for diseases such as dementia.

It comes after the Royal College of Nursing warned of a "deepening workforce crisis" in the NHS in England.

The College says more than 60,000 posts have been placed at risk or disappeared under this Government, while the service has to make £20bn cuts by 2015.

Meanwhile, the British Medical Association will meet on Thursday to discuss a possible strike action over proposed changes to their contracts.
