Clashes reported in Italy
There are reports of injuries at anti-austerity protests taking place in the Italian cities of Milan and Turin, the news wire AFP says.
According to the BBC, riot police in Rome fired tear gas at protesters, who hurled objects at officers.
Unionised workers across Europe are staging a series of demonstrations today, protesting against the swingeing cuts taking place in many countries across the continent.
Participants in the Day of Action and Solidarity are calling on EU leaders to abandon austerity measures and focus on growing the economy.
In Spain, unions will be staging an evening rally outside parliament in Madrid, while in Greece, activists have called for a three-hour walkout in Athens.
General strikes have been called in both Portugal and Spain.
