Hamas chief killed in air strike
The commander of the military wing of Islamist group Hamas and others have been killed in an Israeli air attack on Gaza, officials have confirmed.
Ahmed Said Khalil al-Jabari and another senior Hamas official died after their car was hit by a missile, as Israeli forces launch a widespread operation against militant groups across the Gaza Strip.
Witnesses have told the Associated Press that air strikes have hit several targets across Gaza City.
The authorities in Gaza have confirmed that 9 people have been killed as a result of the attacks, the BBC World Service reports that a child of 11 months was also killed in the bombing.
"The purpose of this operation was to severely impair the command and control chain of the Hamas leadership," the IDF said in a statement.
