£10bn submarine hit by design setback
The safety and performance of the Royal Navy's new multibillion submarine has been thrown into doubt following a number of design and construction setbacks, according to reports. The Guardian claims the new hunter-killer HMS Astute - the first of seven new submarines costing £9.75bn - cannot reach its required top speed, leaving it unable to escape an attack. One source told the paper the submarine had a "V8 engine with a Morris Minor gearbox".
