May lodges Qatada appeal
The Home Secretary has lodged "permission to appeal" papers over the Abu Qatada deportation case.

A decision by the Civil Appeals Office is thought to be due before Christmas.

Three weeks ago Abu Qatada's own appeal against a decision to deport him to Jordan was upheld by a Special Immigration Appeals Commission.

Previous governments have been involved in long-standing legal battles over the radical cleric, who lawyers say cannot be deported to Jordan because of the likelihood evidence gained through torture could be used to convict him.
