Govt defeated on legal aid

Govt defeated on legal aid
The Government has suffered a defeat in the House of Lords over plans to restrict legal aid.

Lord Bach's fatal order motion, which accused the Government of turning its back on welfare cases, was passed by 201-191 by peers.

Following the vote, Lord Bach said: "This is a victory for Parliament in holding Ministers to their word. What the Government should now do is fulfill the undertakings given in the House of Commons at 'ping-pong' by the then Lord Chancellor.

"That would do something to alleviate the position of those highly vulnerable people, including many with disabilities, looking to appeal to First Tier Tribunals on points of social welfare law."
