Ruling paves way for fresh Hillsborough inquest
The High Court has quashed accidental death inquest verdicts on the 96 Liverpool football fans who died at Hillsborough.
The landmark ruling clears the way for a new inquest into the 96 deaths next year.
This will see a fresh examination of the roles of the police, Sheffield council, Sheffield Wednesday football club and the other emergency services, with the possibility of a new verdict of unlawful killing.
The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, ordered fresh inquests following an application by the Attorney General.
Home Secretary Theresa May has also announced a new Independent Police Complaints Commission probe into the tragedy.
She said the new investigation would look into “all of the people and organisations involved” and could lead to criminal prosecutions.
There was some good news this afternoon, with George Osborne announcing that sales of a charity Christmas single to help pay for victims' families' legal costs will not be subject to VAT.
