A new £9m online system to identify children in danger of abuse or neglect is to be set up in hospitals across England.
The Child Protection System, to be rolled out in 2015, will alert hospital staff if children are considered at risk of abuse, or if they have received emergency treatment at other hospitals.
Health Minister Dan Poulter said the scheme would be a "very big step forward" in protecting children at risk of mistreatment.
"We’ve got to make sure our professionals are armed with all the best tools for the job," he told BBC News.
"If you have IT systems at one hospital or one urgent care setting, that don’t talk to each other effectively, then it isn’t putting our professionals in the best place to make sure they’re looking after potentially vulnerable children, or children at risk of busy or neglect. That’s what this is about."
