More than a million better-off families will lose some or all of their child benefit under changes which came into force today.
Labour criticised the move, with Shadow Equalities Minister Yvette Cooper saying that the combination of removing child benefit and cutting tax credits had a disproportionate impact on women.
"New figures show new mums are losing over £1700 in maternity pay, pregnancy support, child tax credit and child benefit. And of course over 95% of the direct losers from Monday's chaotic child benefit changes are likely to be women too," she said in a statement.
But, writing in the Daily Telegraph, London Mayor Boris Johnson praised the Government for doing what he called the "blindingly obvious".
