PM coy on immigration figures
David Cameron has backed Eric Pickles’ decision not to reveal the Government’s current estimates on the level of immigration from Romania and Bulgaria.
Transitional controls on movement from the countries end at the end of 2013, and the Communities Secretary yesterday said he did not have sufficient confidence in the figures to reveal them.
“I completely support what Eric Pickles has said, which is don’t make official predictions unless and until you have got real confidence in those figures,” the Prime Minister told the Today programme.
“If you look at what the calculation was in the case of Poland, it was something like 14,000 – a ridiculously low number – and it turned out to be many, many times that so we don’t want to make that mistake again so it’s right to take the time and get this right.”
