Retail sales fall

Retail sales fall
There was more bad news for the High Street today as retail sales posted an unexpected monthly fall in December.

Sales dropped 0.1% in December compared with the previous month, the Office for National Statistics revealed.

Analysts had expected a rise of around 0.2%.

The ONS put the disappointing figure down to weak sales of household goods, which fell 3%.

The poor figures come after a tough week for the High Street which saw retail chains HMV and Blockbuster enter administration.
