The UK's National Security Adviser, Sir Nigel Kim Darroch, is in Paris today following David Cameron’s discussion with Francois Hollande on Mali and Syria yesterday evening.
Last night Mr Hollande updated Mr Cameron on the situation in the Mali and thanked the PM for the UK's assistance, Downing Street has said.
A joint French and Malian force is poised to seize the city of Timbuktu from Islamist rebels, according to reports.
Rebel forces have retreated north after repeated French airstrikes on their positions.
The French military has confirmed that French-led forces have entered the northern city of Timbuktu.
