Tory chairman Grant Shapps has launched a scathing attack on Chris Huhne ahead of a by-election in the former Energy Secretary's constituency.
He said the people of Eastleigh "been let down by an MP who was being less than straightforward with his constituents".
Mr Huhne resigned after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice yesterday.
In a separate development, UKIP leader Nigel Farage ruled out putting himself forward for the seat.
Writing on the Telegraph website, he said it would not be "in the party’s best interests" for him to stand, as he is responsible for leading the upcoming local election campaign as well as leading a group in the European Parliament.
Labour has been downplaying its chances after securing only 9.6% of the constituency vote in 2010.
