MPs vote for same-sex marriage

MPs vote for same-sex marriage
MPs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of gay marriage, with a majority of 225.

However a large number of Tory MPs failed to back the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, with around 140 thought to have voted against .

In its second reading in the House of Commons, 400 voted for and 175 voted against the Bill, which will allow gay couples to marry.

The passing of the Bill was hailed by party leaders this evening, with David Cameron tweeting it was "step forward" for the country.
