PM warns on EU budget
David Cameron has issued a stark warning to other European leaders, saying there will be no deal on the EU budget unless they agree to a reduction.
Speaking as he arrived for budget talks in Brussels, the Prime Minister said the figures in November's proposals had been "far too high" adding: "If they don't come down, there won't be a deal".
"Frankly, the European Union should not be immune from the sorts of pressures we've had to reduce spending, find efficiencies and make sure that we spend money wisely," he said.
Mr Cameron has already held a meeting with Angela Merkel and Herman van Rompuy in Brussels, but French President Francois Hollande, who had been due to attend, missed the talks.
No. 10 said the Prime Minister felt a achieving a reduction in the budget would be “difficult”, but “do-able”.
Mr Cameron spoke on the phone with German chancellor Ms Merkel last night, and with European Council president Mr van Rompuy and Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte this morning, a Downing Street spokesman said.
