The probe into high mortality rates in hospitals is being extended to cover nine more NHS trusts.
The move means 14 NHS trusts are now being investigated by the NHS medical director, Sir Bruce Keogh.
High mortality rates were the first indicator of problems at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust, which was the subject of the damning report from the Francis Inquiry last week.
