Three horsemeat arrests
Three Britons have been arrested as part of an investigation into the horsemeat scandal.
Two men have been held at a meat firm near Aberystwyth and one at a slaughterhouse in West Yorkshire. The Food Standards Authority had raided and suspended operations at both premises yesterday.
Earlier today, the Government confirmed that the drug ‘Bute’ has entereted the food chain through horsemeat.
However, the Chief Medical Officer downplayed the risk to human health posed by the drug.
"A person would have to eat 500 to 600 horsemeat burgers a day to get close to consuming a human's daily dose," Dame Sally Davies said.
The Government’s “flat-footed” response to the horsemeat crisis has been criticised by a committee of MPs today.
The Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Select Committee also said the FSA’s handling of the crisis proved it was not “fit for purpose”.
