Govt mulls migrant 'register'
A government-commissioned report into the potential impact of Romanian and Bulgarian immigration will not contain an estimate on the number of migrants, a government adviser has said.
“My understanding… is that the Foreign Office-commissioned report from the National Institute [of Social and Economic Research] has a lot of economic detail in it, it doesn’t have numbers,” Professor David Metcalf, chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, said this morning as he confirmed he had not personally seen an estimate.
His comments come after the Immigration minister said EU migrants could be made to register before they would be eligible for public services.
Mark Harper said the Home Office was considering the introduction of a "mandatory register" for EU nationals.
David Cameron yesterday told voters in Eastleigh the Government would do more to stop migrants taking advantage of British public services.
