British troops deployed to Mali
Forty British troops are to be deployed to Mali as part of the EU training mission, Philip Hammond has announced.

The move had been expected and the Defence Secretary said it was “a further demonstration of our commitment to tackle violent extremism”.

The deployment comes after William Hague said he was “really concerned” about the kidnap of seven westerners in northern Nigeria, but refused to comment on reports that a Briton was amongst the victims.

Gunmen seized seven people in Jama'are, a town in the northern state of Bauchi.

Speaking from Brussels this morning, the Foreign Secretary said: “I am really concerned of course that there has been another kidnap in northern Nigeria. We are in touch with the Nigerian authorities about this. I can’t tell you any more about that at the moment, but we will give you more information as we can.”
