Cardinal O'Brien steps down
Britain's most senior Catholic, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, has resigned following allegations of "inappropriate" behaviour.

The Vatican yesterday said it would look into claims of misconduct towards four priests, dating back to the 1980s.

The Observer said the priests - from the diocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh - made the allegations to the Vatican in the week before Pope Benedict announced his resignation.

Cardinal O'Brien has been Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh since 1985.
