British Gas profits up 11%
Downing Street has refused to condemn British Gas after the energy giant announced a rise in profits despite a hike in consumer bills last winter.

Profits rose 11% in 2012 to £606m, while its parent company Centrica also saw a 14% jump in profits.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the Government was taking a range of measures to help people with the cost of living, including the Energy Bill which requires companies to simplify tariffs.

“I think what the very clear message that the Government is giving is that it is this Government that will put in legislation measures that will simplify tariff strictures and put in place a commitment that people will get the best tariff available.”
