David Miliband launches leader bid

David Miliband has formally announced his bid to become Labour leader as the contest between the former foreign secretary and his brother Ed gets underway. He told an audience of Labour activists: "the Blair/Brown era is over, new Labour isn't new anymore." He said the party had to "celebrate the successes" of its time in office. Former Welsh secretary Peter Hain has today endorsed Ed Miliband.
