David Laws resigns

David Laws resigns
David Laws has resigned as chief secretary to the treasury following revelations in the Daily Telegraph he claimed up to £40,000 over five years to rent a room in the London flat of his long-term partner. Danny Alexander will take Mr Laws' post in the treasury and will be replaced as Scotland secretary by fellow Lib Dem Michael Moore. Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg said he hopes "there's an opportunity for David Laws to rejoin the government" when the investigation into his expenses concludes.

Yes he should resign because of his dubious expenses - but so should Cameron for claiming additional housing allowance when he only had one mortgage.

It is already falling apart what a shambles, and brought down by the machinations of the the right wing press.

Wilkie

know what - If it is found he was cohabiting with a 'partner' then perhaps the relevant authority should pay him for half of the mortgage, and other expenses that he did not claim. WIth many MP;s (including the PM) claiming over 23000 a year on mortgage claims for their second homes that would be only fair and equitable. I am sure that this would come out to much more than he claimed. All the media are appalling - most make it sound as if he stole money from the taxpayer, and the salivating even on BBC is disgusting.

This has got nothing to do with the BBC don't pretend it has.

I am angry and disappointmed that the Telegraph has chosen now to publish this about David Laws. This announcement was calculated to cause as much damage and pain to our new government which I support. Please leave him alone to get on with his job. He seems an honourable man and we are lucky to have him. I think our collective bile should be directed at the Telegraph.

Little Angussie

It is unsurprising but sad all the same to see all the lefty bloggers on here and also the BBC salivating and licking their lips accusing David Laws and playing this story for all its worth. As far as I am concerned I think that Laws is an honest man who genuinely was trying to keep his personal life secret. Is this any worse than the Balls and Cooper flipping their addresses 3 times? Alistair Darling flipping, Gordon Brown splitting the cost of a fitted kitchen over two years so he could claim maximum expenses - as well as the Conservative and Lib Dems who did similar. The saddest thing is the sheer hypocracy of people like Alister Campbell, who hounded David Kelly to his death is still lionised by the BBC and the Labour party. For Gods sake the illegal immigrant who was baroness Scotland's housekeeper is jailed yet Scotland who lied about seeing her papers, is home free. Even the biggest traitor to the Labour movement who was caught with his drawers down shaggin his secretary over a government desk for gods sake, is rewarded with a Peerage and a seat in the Lords. The sheer hypocracy of these people is utterly repulsive and they should not be allowed to drive an able minister like David Laws from office. Shame on the Telegraph too, for keeping this back until there was genuine public interest in David Laws.

Penny Drops

Gone. Good. Dishonest Hypocrite. Now may I suggest that the party whips get their act together and find out who else has been or still is fiddling their expenses. If they don’t, this sort of thing is going to keep happening. Any party that doesn’t do this has only itself to blame.
