Understanding the heart of Westminster

The Phi100 Fantasy Cabinet

Current leaders aside, which politicians are rated the most effective by their peers?

Imagine if Peter Mandelson was Prime Minister.  Sitting alongside him at the Cabinet table is Vince Cable, his trusted Chancellor. Michael Gove is Home Secretary, and William Hague occupies the fourth great office of state as Foreign Secretary.

New results from the PoliticsHome Phi100 – a survey of 100 political experts and insiders – suggest that this is the quartet currently seen within Westminster as the most capable in the country. Current leaders aside, the consensus fantasy cabinet might be headlined by these names.

The Phi100 panel includes MPs and peers from across the political spectrum, leading media commentators, and key party strategists, as well as thought leaders from the UK’s top think tanks and universities.

On a regular basis PoliticsHome tracks the reputation of the country’s leading politicians by asking the Phi100 to rate their performance on a scale from one to ten, where one is ‘could not be less effective’ and ten is ‘could not be more effective’.

Party leaders, whom we track separately, are excluded.

It is Mandelson and Cable who top June’s table, each rated at 7.8.

Cable, who has led the tracker since its inception over a year ago, must now be content to share first place with Mandelson, whose rating has risen sharply from 6.5 in March.

Gove and Hague - who have also performed consistently well - join them in the top table.  Their is a clear gap between the top four and Alan Johnson, who leads the chasing pack with a rating of 6.2.

David Miliband scores a low 4.4, yet to regain the high scores he received last year.

It was felt by many panellists that Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper – who also registered low scores – needed more time before their performance in new roles could be comprehensively assessed.

Propping up the table is Ed Balls, who received a poor 3.7.

For full results, see the table below:

For each of the following list of politicians , please rate how good they are at their job, where 1 is "could not be less effective" and 10 is "could not be more effective".

Oh my good god!!!

Mandelson is damaged goods and an oily weasel too. He's helped to prop up Brown to be sure, but he's damaged the party's chances in the polls immeasurably.

Whaaat!!

I would not trust Mandelson with a powder puff and as for the other three, principles have they none!

I am true blu but you have to admit that mandelson is one smart operator. His interview with marr was a tour de force and to be honest I think he would have made a half decent PM.

Gove and Hague are both top flight politicians but in addition i would have to include cameron somewere in the top four. He has done a brill job of rescuing the conservatives and deserves to be mentioned

Interesting to note that Balls  (Brown's heir apparent) is at the bottom of this list.
