Packaging standards and recycling - why can’t retailers lead the way?

APPG for the Packaging Manufacturing Industry Secretariat | The Packaging Debate

Those who are well versed in the super marketing and retail worlds will be forgiven a quick smirk at the headline before moving on.

There’s no need to dwell here on the received wisdom regarding these high street giants - save to note that the question above hasn’t been close to being answered yet.

And why not?  Perhaps, following recent failed merger bids, there is a whiff of fear of the MMC Commission and the business of any retailers getting together in a room in order to sort through differences and agreements.

However, the time is approaching when such qualms will have to give way to action - coordinated and clear. The rest of the UK supply chain and its recycling infrastructure desperately needs leadership. It also needs consistency – consistency of collection and recycling throughout all local authorities and consistency of end-of-life best practice for packaging -  labelling and recycling.

Enter Dave Lewis, plain-speaking Tesco CEO: Having announced his resignation in a surprise move last October Tesco have managed to persuade Lewis - widely credited with the recent revival of the supermarket giant - to stay on until this October 2020.

And this makes this policy of his – link below - all the more compelling.

How about it retailers? What’s not to like with a ‘new national framework’. What is the next step between yourselves?
