RCVS

Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

The RCVS is the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in the UK. Our role is to set, uphold and advance ethical, educational and clinical veterinary standards, so as to enhance society through improved animal health and welfare.

Following the decision to leave the European Union the RCVS has published the following Brexit Principles, in order to prepare for the risks and opportunities that Brexit may bring:

  • Vital veterinary work continues to get done – this Principle focuses on maintaining and strengthening the veterinary workforce. In part this can be achieved by increasing the number of home-grown vets and VNs to offset any reduction in the migration of the workforce from overseas, and this would require an increase in both the capacity of UK vet schools and their funding levels.

  • High standards of animal welfare remain and improve – by advocating for a reform of mutual recognition and for any future movement restrictions to focus on non-EAEVE accredited graduates.

  • RCVS is a global force for good – by expanding our global membership and Mind Matters Initiative, as well as working with developing countries to improve the accreditation of veterinary schools.

The policies can be read in more detail on the Brexit homepage of the RCVS website
