We need to take action with proven means to reduce emissions

We need to see nuclear projects championed by Government, with strong progress on establishing the funding mechanism that will deliver them at reduced cost to the customer, says NIA Chief Executive, Tom Greatrex.

There is now political consensus that we have to reduce our emissions to net zero. Rather than haggling over targets we need to get on and take action, especially where we have proven means of doing this.

Independent data1 mapping carbon intensity shows countries and regions like France, Sweden and Ontario in Canada have all had great success in reducing emissions by giving the major roles both to renewables and to dependable 24-7 nuclear power.

The majority of our existing nuclear fleet will be closed by the end of this decade.  It provided over a third of our low carbon electricity in 2019. The good news is we are not short of power station projects, for large and small scale reactors, waiting in the wings ready to deliver clean power.

We need to see these projects championed by Government, with strong progress on establishing the funding mechanism that will deliver them at reduced cost to the customer.
