Field Marshall Lord Guthrie now backs Brexit
A senior retired military figure and previous advocate of Britain remaining in the EU has switched sides in the debate and now backs Brexit, the Telegraph reports.
Field Marshall Lord Guthrie signed a letter in February calling for the UK to remain part of the European Union.
But Lord Guthrie has now publically stated that he regrets the decision.
He told the Telegraph: “I think I made a mistake. Now I’ve thought about it some more.”
He continued: “I think a European Army could damage NATO. It is expensive. It’s unnecessary duplication to have it. It would appeal to some euro vanity thing…
“From the point of view of the defence of the United Kingdom, a Leave vote is better.
“We wouldn’t be distracted. We could spend the money on the really important things.”
