Downing Street: No plans for Bank Holiday to mark Royal wedding

1 min read

Britons will not be given a Bank Holiday to mark Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle, Downing Street has confirmed.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said there were "no plans" to give workers the day off when the pair tie the knot next year.

Some had hoped that the event would be marked with a national holiday, as was the case when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got married in 2011.

However, the Number 10 spokesman said: "There isn't a precedent in this area. For example, there was no Bank Holiday for Prince Andrew's wedding in 1986, or Prince Edward's in 1999."

Theresa May had earlier passed on her "very warmest congratulations" to Prince Harry and his bride-to-be.

She said: "This is a time of huge celebration and excitement for two people in love and, on behalf of myself, the Government and the country, I wish them great happiness for the future."

Jeremy Corbyn said: "I wish them well - I hope they have a great life together."

Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon took to Twitter to pass on her congratulations.
