Today the Ministry for Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) launched a consultation on its ‘First Homes’ scheme.

Paul Broadhead, BSA Head of Mortgages & Housing commented:

“The BSA welcomes the launch of the Government's consultation on the First Homes scheme.

“Building societies are major players in supporting homeownership, it forms part of their distinctive social purpose.

“Help to Buy, shared ownership, intergenerational and student mortgages make up just some of the innovative products and services available within our sector to help people get that all-important foot on the ladder.”

“We will engage with the detail of the consultation, particularly around the eligibility criteria for local people, key workers and others, and look forward to working constructively with Government to deliver their housing plans

“We hope the First Homes scheme marks a step in the right direction, plugging some of the 300,000-property shortfall between housing supply and demand. We also hope Government continue to explore opportunities for all tenures to support housing for all.”
