Juncker: 'Anglo-Saxon world' ready to crush the euro

The head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has warned that speculators in the "Anglo-Saxon world" would seek to tear apart the eurozone if Greece leaves the single currency.

Mr Juncker insisted that 'Grexit' is "not an option", warning that if Greece were to leave "some, notably in the Anglo-Saxon world, will try everything to break down the euro area piece by piece, bit by bit".

His comments will be seen as a thinly veiled warning that speculators in the City of London and Wall Street are ready to pounce on any instability in the eurozone.

But Mr Juncker insisted the eurozone would not fall apart, saying: “The world wants to know where we’re going. They want to know that the monetary union is irreversible. It is a currency that is made to last.”
