Firms must publish gender pay gap data

Large companies will be forced to publish data on the difference between how much male and female workers are paid.

Firms with over 250 employees could be fined £5,000 if they do not comply.

Just five companies have published figures under the current voluntary approach.

Liberal Democrat Equalities Minister Jo Swinson said it was "fantastic news" that her party had won the "argument in government" against the Conservatives, who opposed the move.
