Paul Green, Sagas director of communications said:

“George Osborne’s instincts are right – people want to pass something on to their family and inheritance tax should be for the really wealthy not a burden on middle Britain who just happen to have lived in a property hot spot. It’s great that the Chancellor has listened to the Saga generations.”

In a poll of more than 10,000 over 50s two thirds (65%) thought that the main family home should be excluded from inheritance tax calculations. There are now many parts of the country where just owning a relatively modest home puts you in the frame for paying inheritance tax.
