The Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) has opened applications and is looking to recruit as many as three trustees to help drive the charity's mission to improve the welfare of animals through veterinary science, education and debate.

AWF funds research, supports veterinary education, provides pet care advice and encourages debate on animal welfare issues. AWF trustees are responsible for facillitating the ahcievement of the charity's mission, providing strategic direction and safeguarding AWF's brand and reputation. While the emphasis is on representation from within the veterinary professions, AWF would welcome applications from those from outside the sector who have relevant skills that will enhance the Board.

Trustees are expected to attend at least two meetings a year during their three-year term, as well as AWF's annual flagship event in Westminster, the AWF Discussion Forum. In addition to this, they are also encouraged to engage with one or more AWF's Sub Committees exploring particular areas of the charity's activity, such as grant making and fundraising. This is an important role which requires a commitment to work collectively in AWF's best interests.

AWF Trustee Nicola Martin said:
"Being a Trustee of AWF gives you a fantastic opportunity to work on a wide range of welfare issues facing a variety of species rather than just those in your area of expertise. I enjoy discussing and debating issues, sharing my views and understanding those of others, as well as having the chance to shape the future of this great charity."

Gudrun Ravetz, British Veterinary Association President and AWF Trustee, said:
"As a vet-led charity, AWF is uniquely poised to offer a first-hand insight into the welfare challenges facing animals, and the scope and expertise to suggest possible solutions. I consider it a privilege to be an AWF Trustee myself, and I encourage my colleagues from within the profession, as well as others who feel they can contribute positively, to apply to be part of the Board."
