Tony Blair is resigning as Middle East peace envoy, according to the Associated Press.

Mr Blair was appointed to the post, which represents Russia, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations, on the day he stood down as prime minister in 2007.

An official told the news agency that Mr Blair had tendered his resignation.

The Financial Times reported in March that the former Labour leader was looking to “recast” his role in the Middle East, remaining involved in the process but in a different position.
